About the Site

Model View Couture takes a long look at the little details that make great digital experiences. While the content is primarily aimed at developers and designers looking to make a better user experience, everyone is welcome.

The name itself is derived from Model View Controller, a term coined at Xerox PARC in the 1970s to describe a software design pattern separating data, interface, and behaviour of an application. Couture comes from the French “haute couture”, or high fashion. It specifically refers to high quality, hand-made, bespoke garments. I believe great apps are made when design and development sweat the details to create something neither could make themselves.

This site is generated from Hugo, a static site generator that looked simple enough to give it a try, and didn’t require using Javascript to make templates or build scripts. The theme is mine, and still very much a work in progress. Once the code isn’t completely horrible, I’ll share it with the world. The theme doesn’t use any frameworks, or systems, just modern CSS that looks good in any viewport.

I’m your host, Christopher Harrington. You probably know me from Twitter, or from the now moribund podcast Ruining it for Everyone with my co-host Maggie McFee. I’m also the Director of User Experience and Technology at Imaginary Forces, in New York City.
